Sept. 13, 1978 marked 45 yr of scientific and pedagogical activity of the Director of Human Morphology of the Academy of Medical Science, USSR. A. P. Avtsyn created a new method for studying myelin fibers, and was the first to conceptualize the hormonal dependence of certain brain tumors. A significant portion of his work was devoted to infectious pathology. A major contribution was his work on war pathology (1941-1945). After study of 2500 observations of pathologoanatomical material, he developed a pathological anatomy of wound sepsis, infectious-alimentary dystrophy of wound and bullet wound osteomyelitis. In the area of experimental pathology he proposed new models of dysenteric, laparotyphous, colibacillary, staphylo-, strepto-, pneumo-, coccal and tubercular pneumonia in mice with the purpose of studying the chemotherapeutic effect of various antibiotics. He was the founder of geographic pathology in the USSR. During the past 10 yr he studied the mechanisms of choleraic intoxication. A bibliography of about 200 works by Avtsyn is given.
