Five of a litter of seven puppies aged 3-4 weeks showed a varying degree of "hair loss" in the pigmented areas of the body, especially on the pinnae of the ear and on the tail. Histological examination showed abnormally dense accumulations of pigment in the melanocytes. The follicles were dilated and plugged with fragments of heavily pigmented hair. Their lining cells appeared atrophic. This was the first litter sired by the father, and the dam had previously borne two normal litters.
