The physical principles of mammographic systems used to detect malignancies and other cystic diseases in patients are presented. Tissue composition of the breast, quality of the radiographic image, X-ray sources, radiation exposure, energy optimization and diagnostic implications are considered. Scored calcifications are detected in the 0.1-0.4 mm size range by xeroradiography and screen film systems approximately 25% and 13% of the malignancies diagnosed histologically, respectively.
