Birthweights of Nigerian children at Ibadan

A total of 1290 live deliveries from 1193 mothers in Ibadan was studied. Mean birthweight, 3.15 kg for boys and 2.95 kg for girls, was similar to those of children in other areas. There were 321 infants of low birthweight, 2.5 kg or less; the high incidence was possibly due to socio-economic factors, since 57% of mothers were in the lowest class, to the high incidence of multiple pregnancies and because the hospital deals mainly with abnormal obstetric emergencies.
