Six obese men weighing 80 to 122, 98 average kg and the age range 25 to 46, average 38 years old, in sedentary occupations, exercised vigorously on bicycle ergometer and treadmill with back pack for 3.5 h at -34 deg C on 10 successive days. There was an early loss of about 1 kg water and a subsequent loss of about 4 kg fat (estimated from skinfold thickness and underwater weighing). The fat loss was greater than an average calculated deficit of energy of 5.88 MJ, equivalent to 2 kg fat during the 10 days. Underwater weighing indicated that there was a small increase in lean body mass, immediately after the 10-day period and 2 months later.
