Quasi-contamination of a germfree mouse isolator

Following the replacement of a damaged glove of a germfree mouse isolator, some illness and deaths occurred in the mouse colony which were considered to be possibly due to contamination. Organisms were observed microscopically in the gut contents of the mice but repeated attempts to cultivate them proved unsuccessful. It was finally concluded that the organisms were non-viable, that they originated from sterile diet and that the deaths were due to another cause.
