An attempt is made to elucidate the nature of semigamy, 1 of the types of apomictic reproduction. In some species of Rudbeckia [R. speciosa, R. triloba, R. laciniata, R. sullivantii and R. amplexicaulis] stimulation of a diploid egg to division takes place in the presence of closely related spermium, in distant crosses the stimulation is absent. The 1st division of the spermium and egg is often synchronous, but afterwards that synchrony is disturbed because of different mitotic activity.
