The history of cytology is briefly outlined, the subject being covered under 3 major headings: early microscopy, the cell theory and cellular pathology, and clinical cytology. A glossary of pioneers in cytology is presented in table form which lists types of specimens with the 1st report of cytologic study and the 1st report of malignant cells.
