Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis presenting with hemoccult-positive stools

Pneumatosis cystoides intestinalis is an uncommon entity characterized by the presence of many gas-filled cysts in the sub-serosa or submucosa of the small or large intestine. It can be confused with other more common disorders such as multiple colonic polyps, villous adenoma, carcinoma and submucosal lymphoid hyperplasia. A 63 yr. old woman was identified on the basis of hemoccult-positive stools in a screening program for the detection of early colon cancer and subsequently diagnosed by Ba enema, sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy, all of which were typical of this abnormality.
