The serum phosphohexose isoemerase (PHI), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and its isoenzyme distribution were studied in patients with benign and malignant breast tumors. Though there was an increase in serum PHI and LDH activities, they were not statistically significant. The heat stability index of serum LDH which is a ratio of heat stable to heat labile activity, was altered in malignancy. In benign tumor patients there was a significant increase in LDH3, LDH4 and LDH5 isoenzyme fractions and a decrease in LDH1. These changes were more pronounced in malignancy. The serum LDH isoenzyme patterns may serve as a useful basis for prognosis in breast cancer.
