Statistical investigations of symptomatics and syndromatics in 120 paris of endogenous psychotic parent-child and sibling relationships

The symptoms of all 240 pair-individuals were documented as being either evident or not evident. For the statistical analysis and interpretation, 3 levels were established: level of single symptoms, level of symptom groups and level of syndromes. Single symptoms, represented in the schizophrenic and manic-depressive groups, reveal significant differences in distribution. Intra- and interpair correlations within these 2 groups were similar, suggesting that genetic and/or environmental influences have only small effects. A greater genetic dependency was assumed with symptoms of schizophrenic psychoses; the blood related and non-blood related schizophrenic or manic-depressive groups are alike in symptom profiles. Syndrome differences were observed only sporadically, especially within parent-child relationships, and may be due to age factors. Blood related and non-blood related groups were alike in syndrome profiles. Nosological and biological heterogeneity of schizophrenic and manic-depressive psychoses was confirmed.
