Female athletes have been reported to take multiple dosages of oral contraceptives (o.c.s) in an effort to improve their performance. While 1 study shows that this practice may alleviate a premenstrual reduction in performance, no significant increase in overall performance can be effected. The multiple dosages of o.c.s which female athletes take can increase the risk of serious thromboembolic disease, ovarial insufficiency, and related disorders.
