Of 142 coeliac patients at a Gastrointestinal Unit in Edinburgh, 60 who had not been seen for 1 year had relapsed when examined at follow-up. Since it is concluded that a similar pattern prevails throughout the UK, the need for long-term treatment is stressed, with continuing dietary advice and regular assessment of nutritional and clinical status, examination of intestinal biopsies and detection and treatment of complications.
