Lemmings and other rodents are suspected as the reservoir of human epidemic nephropathy, and the agent is suspected to be a virus. In man, there is acute haemorrhagic interstitial nephritis with slight glomerulitis. It is not known whether domestic animals have a related disease, though it may occur among cats and horses. Since the aetiology of the condition is unsolved, prophylaxis in the form of rodenticides, unnecessary contact with domestic animals, and avoidance of inhalation of rodent-contaminated stable dust is recommended.
