The effects of electric stimulation of the hypothalamus preoptic area (PA), anterior hypothalamic areas (AHA) and mammillary bodies (MB) on the responses of visual cortex neurons to light flashes were studied in immobilized rabbits. The evoked stimulation of hypothalamic nuclei changes in 90% of the neurons. The poststimulus histogram method should differences between the effect of stimulation of PA, AHA and MB. After stimulation of AHA or MB the neuronal responses to flashes increased, predominantly the long-latency responses (LLR). The effect of PA stimulation was more complex and variable. In this case the changes of neuronal response depended on correlation between the evoked and background activity of the same neuron, and predominantly the short-latency response (SLR) increased. Pa, AHA and MB apparently affect different levels of the visual analyzer.
