Importation of malaria into the People's Republic of Bulgaria (PRB)

From 1966-1975 in Bulgaria 132 cases of malaria imported from abroad by Bulgarian citizens and foreigners from Africa and Asia were registered. There were 68 cases of Plasmodium vivax (53.6%), 48 (37.8%) with P. falciparum, 10 (7.8%) with P. ovale and 1 (0.8%) with P. malariae. The asymptomatic carrier state was prevalent among foreigners while Bulgarian people had acute diseases. Among Bulgarian citizens developing the disease 50% lived in tropical countries up to 1 mo., of them 2 persons spent only 1 day there. Depsite the fact that climatic conditions and a high density of vectors [Anopheles] favor dissemination of malaria, no local cases developed as a result of importation. A complex of measures is used to prevent malaria among the Bulgarian people leaving for tropical countries and to protect the country against importation and spread of malaria.
