Radiosensitization of hypoxic cells by chemical drugs

Presence of hypoxic cells in tumor masses is a major problem in radiotherapy of solid tumors. Certain electron affinic drugs (O2 mimics) showed selective radiosensitization of hypoxic cells. Metronidazole and Ro-07-0582 [1-(2-nitroimidazolyl)-3-methoxyisopropanol] were proved as potent radiosensitizers. In humans, high doses of metronidazole produced no toxic effects except transient nausea. Better radiosensitization is expected with Ro-07-0582.
