In the U.S., about half of the women over 50 years of age use oral estrogen preparations to counter climacteric afflictions compared with 2% in Norway and 4% in Sweden. The use of synthetic estrogens in Norway decreased due to an indication of increased risk of endometrial cancer in women using them, after an initial increase among women over 50 with climacteric afflictions from 1.5% in 1973 to 2.1% in 1976. In Sweden, there was a 64% increase in the use of estrogens by women with climacteric afflictions, mostly in women between 45-74 years of age. A stagnation in the increase of women using estrogens to counteract climacteric afflictions followed in 1976 in Sweden. It costs about 100 Swedish kronar per year to use estrogens in treating climacteric afflictions.
