Effect of salivain on gastric secretion

Gastric secretion, secretion of HCl and protein were inhibited by saliva and i.v. kallikrein (salivain) from rat submandibular glands. Despite considerable activation of pepsin, its total production also decreased under the action of salivain. The i.v. injection of bradykinin (35 .mu.g/kg) did not affect the level of gastric secretion. A significant decrease in gastric secretion was observed at a dose of salivain 2.5 mg/kg and above and maximal inhibition occurred 4 h after pylorus ligation. Preliminary adrenalectomy does not remove the salivain inhibiting action. Sialogastrone, an inhibitor of gastric secretion described previously, apparently is the kallikrein of the submandibular glands.
