Lincomycin (2 .mu.g/ml)-colistin (20 U/ml) medium (LC medium) was compared with vancomycin-colistimethate-nystatin medium (VCN medium) developed by Thayer and Martin. Cervical and rectal specimens from 97 street prostitutes in Tokyo, Japan were used. Three were 15 (15.5%) infected persons. Cervical specimens taken from 13 persons yielded gonococci on both media and those taken from 2 persons gave positive results on LC medium only. Three rectal specimens yielded gonococci on LC medium, but 1 failed to do so on VCN medium. Rectal infection was found only among persons with cervical infection. Growth on LC medium of contaminant bacteria, especially gram-positive was comparable with that on VCN medium. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of lincomycin was 8 .mu.g/ml against the 2 most susceptible strains of the 26 gonococcal strains isolated from the prostitutes and male patients. MIC for vancomycin ranged from 1.0-64 .mu.g/ml. Three of 22 strains showed MIC below 3 .mu.g/ml. Lincomycin was probably a preferable substitute for vancomycin; it should be used at a low concentration (2 .mu.g/ml).
