Endoscopic examination revealed a granulomatous mass on the nasal septum of a 13-yr-old gelding with a persistent serosanguineous discharge from the nostril. White, irregular protrusions, containing hyphae and necrotic tissue, were present on the mass, which was 2 cm wide, 1 cm thick and extended 7.5 cm caudally from the mucocutaneous junction. Phycomycosis was confirmed by histological examination of granulomatous tissue. Repeated infiltration of the entire lesion with 40 mg amphotericin B and topical application of amphotericin B and DMSO resulted in regression of the lesion until only a mucosal scar remained. The lesion has not recurred after 3 yr. Another case of nasal phycomycosis responded favourably to topical application of the amphotericin B/DMSO mixture, twice daily for 4 weeks.
