The blink reflex (BR) in 3 patients with trigeminal neurotomy (2-unilateral, 1-bilateral) was investigated. Its 1st component (R1) was absent on the side of the neurotomy, while its 2nd component (R2) was present, but in the 3rd patient with bilateral neurotomy and with the most pronounced absence of sensitivity in the trigeminal nerve region it had a much delayed latency. In all 3 patients R2 was also elicited by stimulation in the region inervated by the rear roots C2-C3. In the 3rd patient the latency of R2, evoked by stimulation of C2-C3, was < that of R2 induced by stimulation of the supraorbital nerves.
