Immunologic mechanisms that are becoming increasingly better understood underlie the body's defense against bacterial infection which is of daily concern to every practicing surgeon. Familiarity with modern principles of immunology not only provides a better basic understanding of clinical infection for the surgeon, but guides him in dealing with patients who may have an unsuspected or proven depressed immune response.
