The effect of .alpha.-chlorohydrin on the epididymides of castrated, and castrated and testosterone treated dogs was investigated to determine whether .alpha.-chlorohydrin has a direct action on epididymal physiology and biochemistry. Castration alone decreased the size of the epididymides. Castration followed by administration of .alpha.-chlorohydrin denuded the epididymal tubules. In castrated dogs treated with .alpha.-chlorohydrin and in addition with testosterone the epididymal tubules were similarly denuded, their lumen showing the presence of sloughed off cells and arrested spermatozoa; in no case was obstruction of the lumen of the epididymal tubules observed. In castrated dogs .alpha.-chlorohydrin inhibited the synthesis of RNA and sialic acid in the epididymides, but simultaneous testosterone administration maintained it on the normal levels.
