Effect of long-acting oestriol on the vaginal cytology of postmenopausal women

Postclimacteric women (8) were given 80 mg polyestriol phosphate by i.m. injection in order to analyze the effect of the drug on the vaginal cytology. In 4 patients whose vaginal smears showed complete atrophy before treatment, a clear but weak estrogen effect was observed after the medication. This effect appeared after 1 wk in 3 patients and after 2 wk in 1 patient, and it lasted 4 wk in 3 cases and 2 wk in 1. In 4 patients whose vaginal smears showed a weak estrogen effect before treatent, the therapy did not result in any significant change of the vaginal smear pattern.
