Because of the presence of fetal Hb, there is a period from birth through early infancy when the person is symptom free but by the 6th mo. of life, Hb S becomes manifest and the disease becomes clinically manifest. Chronic anemia usually occurs and persists for life. Specific radiologic changes occurring in bone, usually due to vascular occlusion and local ischemia, are described along with sample radiographs. Visceral changes in the spleen, lung, heart and kidney are also described.
