Nursing homes represent one aspect within the continuum of long-term care. Their definitions as well as their function have changed within a historical context. Their growth is related to legislative processes and to the economy of the country as a whole. The suggested theoretical framework is useful for increased understanding and objective evaluation of facilities, services and the patient population. Shortcomings of present long-term care and proposed improvements are discussed.
