Patients (252) with typhoid fever were treated with 5 different drug regimens, including chloramphenicol alone, chloramphenicol + ampicillin, tri-comexazole, tri-comexazole + ampicillin and chloramphenicol + tri-comexazole. The combination of chloramphenicol and tri-comexazole resulted in a shorter duration of the febrile period as compared to other regimens; the combination of chloramphenicol + ampicillin resulted in complete recovery of all patients, with none of them becoming a carrier. Although chloramphenicol remains an effective drug in treatment of typhoid fever, one can resort to alternative treatments which might prevent emergence of strains resistant to chloramphenicol.
