Sugar intake and diabetes mellitus

Death rate for diabetes has risen steadily in North America and most of Europe, though many deaths are from the complications of diabetes and are not recorded as being from diabetes. The death rate fell in England and Wales from 1940 to 1955 among persons over 45 years old. The basic defect is not known. Non-dietary causal factors are noted, as are high national intakes of sugar and relation between sugar intake, obesity and death rate from diabetes. Short-term experiments on man and animals are reviewed. Future research should be in health patterns of persons with low and high intakes of sugar or of fibre.
