Natural anti-spleenic precipitins in human blood

Specificity and frequency of occurrence of anti-splenic antibodies in human serum were studied in 152 healthy subjects and 119 patients of both sexes and varying age. Precipitin titers were determined by Ouchterlony's test on agar gel with extracts of human, mouse and rat spleens and with extracts of other human tissues and organs. Anti-splenic allo- and auto-precipitins were demonstrated irrespective of age and state of subjects. Their ubiquitous occurrence indicates that they are natural antibodies, the physiologic function of which can only be speculated upon by alternative hypotheses.
