The Desmarres eyelid clamp was extremely useful in performing a number of major eyelid procedures . The globe was protected. The clamp tourniquet effect prevented hemorrhage, facilitating identification of structures. The unexcised margins were held in situ allowing sutures to be preplaced for accurate coaptation before removing the clamp. One example illustrated the early removal of a large basal cell carcinoma with assurance that the margins were clear. The cosmetic result was excellent, and the disadvantages of radiation therapy were avoided.
