The experiments carried out by the WHO method with 4 Azerbaijan [USSR] populations of A. sacharovi of which 3 showed various degrees of resistance; high irritability of all populations was revealed upon contact with DDT, although in one of the indices, the number of flights of mosquitoes from DDT-impregnated filter paper, the resistant mosquitoes were less irritable than the sensitive ones. The observations of the behavior of DDT-resistant mosquitoes carried out in experimentally treated premises and under practical conditions of treated villages in Azerbaijan showed that, owing to irritability behavior, over 30% of mosquitoes left the premises during treatment; for 7-10 days mosquitoes avoided the treated places even with the presence of prey, despite the fact that their contact with treated walls caused almost no death (1 wk after treatment, 7-21% of mosquitoes died). Temporary concentration of mosquitoes was observed in untreated premises; as a rule, in human dwellings, which are treated less frequently than cattle pens, increasing the potential danger of mosquitoes as vectors of malaria. The tactics of malaria mosquito control in Azerbaijan must be reconsidered; as mass death of mosquitoes (over 90%) occurs only on the day of treatment, it would be expedient to use DDT only as an insecticide of short-term effect and to turn maximum attention to larval control.
