Antigens of normal cerebro-spinal fluid

An antibody to unconcentrated pooled human CSF was prepared in the rabbit. It showed, by immunoelectrophoresis (IEP), 3 components in the CSF pool-albumin, siderophilin and immunoglobulin [Ig]G. Fifty normal CSF samples were analyzed by IEP with the CSF antibody; 19 showed a single arc of albumin and 31 all the 3 components seen in the CSF pool. Crossed immunoelectrophoresis (CIEP) showed 2-4 additional components in the .alpha.-2 and .beta. regions. Of the CSF samples, 8 showed in IEP a 4th component with .gamma. mobility. Since the arc of this component was close to the antibody-trough it was thought to have a small molecular size. The .gamma. component was not seen when the CSF were tested, in IEP, with an anti human serum antibody suggesting that it was unique to the CSF. Absorption experiments indicated the presence of traces of the .gamma. component in pooled normal human serum. The CSF antibody lacked precipitins against the macro-molecular components of human serum.
