Dientamoeba fragilis--a new parasitologic problem

Dientamoeba fragilis was present in 7 of 121 children admitted with various complaints, including gastrointestinal disorders, to the Regional Paediatric Hospital at Kosice in Czechoslovakia. Metronidazole treatment relieved long standing abdominal pain in one of the patients, but in the others no correlation between the presence of D. fragilis and the clinical diagnosis could be established. Cultivation for diagnosis and the morphology and biology of D. fragilis are briefly discussed.
