The order of coding proteins in the poliovirus genome and the mode of function of poliovirus RNA as a matrix for protein synthesis are studied. A comparative analysis of the 2 genetic maps of poliovirus showed that both maps were similar in the scale and phenotypical characteristics of equally localized mutants. Complementation experiments with ts-mutants indicated the existence of 2 complementation groups: the 1st group comprised of mutants of capsid protein; the 2nd group, mutants of RNA-polymerase. The results indicated the presence, among the poliovirus proteins, of at least 2 polyfunctional protein which participates both in synthesis of RNA and in the process of formation of mature virus, the functioning of non-capsid proteins in the form of a polypeptide block representing a monomer of the RNA-polymerase (or modificator), and the multimeric structure of the RNA-polymerase.
