Growth pattern of low birth weight infants under one year

The subjects were 38 preterm babies (gestation less than 37 weeks and birthweight 2500 g or less), 62 small-for-date babies (gestation over 37 weeks and birthweight 2500 g or less) and 100 term babies. Physical growth pattern was studied during the first 9 months of life. Preterm and small-for-date infants doubled their birthweight by 3 months as against 4 months for term babies. Rate of increase in bodyweight and length of preterm babies was significantly faster than that of term babies in the first 3 months and of small-for dates in the first 6 months.
