The activity of cytochrome-oxidase was less pronounced in the human basal cell epithelioma than in the basal cells of the surrounding normal epidermis. The EM study of the localization of the enzyme revealed that cells of the basal cell epithelioma contained 2 types of mitochondria, the 1st of which having the same size as the epidermal mitochondria and the other being giant mitochondria. The latter seemed to be less active. The weak reactivity of the basal cell epithelioma for cytochrome-oxidase was probably due to the reduction of the cristae in mitochondria and to the functional deficiency of the giant mitochondria.
