Current status of lymphography in the management of lymphomas

A personal review of 160 cases of histologically proven malignant lymphomas with lymphograms performed as part of their initial pretreatment evaluation is presented. Of 100 patients 62.5% were Hodgkin's disease, while non-Hodgkin's lymphomas comprised 37.5% (60 cases) of all cases. Analysis of the data revealed a higher incidence of generalized disease than that published in Western literature with an alteration in staging following a lymphogram in nearly 50% of cases. The high risk category of patients appears to be the mixed cellularity and lymphocyte depleted varieties with systemic symptoms. Forty-two patients had an exploratory laparotormy in addition to the lymphogram, with a 70% lymphogram-laparotomy concordance. The data justifies the use of lymphography in the initial diagnostic evaluation of all lymphomas.
