Qualitative and quantitative detection of yeasts in dermatologic examination material

Results of an examination of 13 510 patients, seen during 1970-74, are analyzed. Yeasts were found most frequently in the inguinal region (in 43.3% of men and 49.1% of women), followed by face and neck (33.3 and 45.7, respectively), rima ani (27, 36.4), fingernails (23.6, 47.4), interdigital spaces of the hands (15.8, 33) and interdigital spaces of the feet (26.3, 27.2). Candida albicans was most frequently isolated from inguinal regions (31.1 men and 28.3 women) and was rarely isolated from toe nails (1.4 and 1.7). The yeasts isolated included C. parapsilosis, (25.3%), C. guilliermondii (23%) and C. albicans (22.2%). C. albicans was found more frequently in the submammary region, the interdigital spaces of the hands and fingernails of women than of men. C. parapsilosis was found more frequently than C. albicans in toe nails of both men and women and fingernails of men.
