Epidemiological and virological study of a conjunctivitis epidemic in Delhi in 1975

Delhi [India] experienced an epidemic of acute conjunctivitis during July to Oct. 1975. Epidemiological investigations were carried out in a mixed urban population of 23,161 in the northern part of the city. It was estimated that 19.64 .+-. 1.4% of the area population suffered from conjunctivitis, which affected all age groups. Primary infection was significantly more frequent in males but secondary attack rates between males and females were not significantly different. Infection spread was more extensive in small families. Humidity seemed to favor disease transmissibility. No cytopathic agent could be isolated from virological investigations of 30 patients attending Opthalmic Outpatient Department of Bara Hindu Rao Hospital, Delhi.
