A mycological investigation of bronchial secretions of 543 patients with acute, chronic and nonspecific lung infections showed that 145 (26.7%) were microscopically positive. Cultures yielded fungi from 66 patients (12.2%), including yeasts (19), Geotrichum candidum (40) and Penicillium spp. (7). In patients with inflammatory lung infections, fungal colonization was probably due to long-term broad-spectrum antibiotic therapy. Yeasts and G. candidum occurred frequently in cases of pulmonary tumours, probably due to altered host response.Four patients (3 with Candida, 1 with G. candidum) were treated successfully with amphotericin B inhalations.
