The ulcerogenic effect of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (indomethacin, nifluminic acid, phenylbutazone and acetylsalicylic acid) on the gut, and the antagonism of this effect by salicylate, was studied in Wistar rats. Possibly, certain types of prostaglandins play a role in maintaining the integrity of the gut and aspirin-like drugs separately induce ulcers by unbalancing prostaglandin equilibrium. When salicylic acid and aspirin-like drugs are combined, disturbances in the equilibrium are not strong enough to cause damage to the gut wall.
