The total duration of movement during sleep was analyzed using a set-up consisting of a seismic transmitter placed under the subject's pillow; an amplifier of transmitter voltage; an amplifier for the actograph; and an integrator of the total movement which consisted of an asymmetric multivibrator and an electronic impulse counter. The ratio of the total duration of movement to the total duration of sleep is a quantitative index of sleep quality and can be used to evaluate normal or disturbed sleep in healthy or ill humans. In studying normal humans, the total duration of sleep movement during 7-8 h was 5-10 min; in subjects with disturbed sleep, movement duration increased to 30 min.
