Urinary excretion of carnitine in man

Carnitine in urine was eluted from a column of Amberlite CG-120 ion-exchange resin and estimated colorimetrically. Average daily excretions were 59.3 plus or minus 3.3 mg in men and 44.1 plus or minus 2.9 mg in women. Excretion varied widely in women during the menstrual cycle and reached a maximum at the time of ovulation, but remained relatively constant in men. Increases in carnitine excretion occurred in states of increased lipolysis induced by fasting or corticotropin injection, indicating that lipid mobilization might be reflected in the excretion of carnitine in urine.
