Adiaspiromycosis in the lungs of a dog

Rales were auscultated from the lungs of an 8-month-old Yorkshire Terrier with anorexia and distended abdomen associated with enteritis. Urinalysis revealed a pH of 6, protein, glucose and blood and a blood urea nitrogen level of 91.6 mg/100 ml was recorded. The dog died, and post-mortem examination revealed nephrosis, pale, swollen kidneys with white streaks extending from capsule to calyces, light depressions on the surface of the lungs and multiple superficial gastric ulcers, and erosions of the caecum and colon. Spherules microscopically compatible with Emmonsia sp. were widely distributed in the lungs. They contained fine, granular material and were surrounded by a double capsule. No endospores were seen.
