Estimations were made at weekly intervals for 4 weeks of serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) and serum aldolase in 14 patients with an amoebic liver abscess, 11 with amoebic hepatitis and 25 with no evidence of amoebic infection. Serum aldolase was raised in all the patients with an amoebic liver abscess, but was raised in only 3 of those with amoebic hepatitis. SGPT was raised in only half the patients with an amoebic liver abscess and in only one with amoebic hepatitis. At the 4th week, the serum aldolase levels of those with an amoebic liver abscess were still significantly above the normal range, whereas the SGPT values had returned to normal.
