A comparison of two dry cow intramammary treatments

181 cows in two experimental herds were infused at drying-off with cloxacillin and penicillin/dihydrostreptomycin. Each preparation was randomly used in the right fore and left hind or in the left fore and right hind quarters. Quarter foremilk samples were collected one week before drying-off, at drying-off, at calving and two weeks after calving. A total of 23 quarters became infected for the first time and six previously infected quarters became reinfected during the dry period. Both antibiotics were equally effective in reducing dry period infections. The numbers of infected quarters at drying off was reduced by 89% by cloxacillin and by 94% by penicillin/dihydrostreptomycin.
