The effect of 0.06, 0.03 and 0.01 mg/kg s.c. doses of Syntostigmine Spofa (Neostigminum) interacting with amitriptyline (4 mg/kg s.c.) upon the recall of conditioned alimentary motor reflexes was studied in cats. Amitriptyline itself was already found to cause a high rise in the number of undesirable incorrect motor reactions both during acute and chronic application. Syntostigmine (0.06 mg/kg s.c.) itself brought about a significant impairment of the reproduction of fixed motor reactions, prolongation of latencies and rise in the number of incorrect responses. The interaction of amitriptyline with Syntostigmine was followed by a substantial decrease of amitryptyline's impairment of performance, the 0.03 mg/kg s.c. dose of Syntostigmine leading to its complete elimination. The results of this interaction are considered to be due to significant cholinergic-anticholinergic antagonism, since from the therapeutical view since anticholinergic symptoms must be eliminated during the treatment with thymoleptic drugs.
