The activity of serum alkaline phosphatase and its isoenzymes was measured in 93 male and 167 female medical students 20 to 25 years old on ordinary diet and when protein provided over 20% or under 10% of the energy value of the food. Energy intakes of the men were 2600-3000 kcal (10 870 to 12 540 kJ) and of the women 2000-2500 kcal (8360 to 10 450 kJ). Values for men were significantly higher (p<0.05) than those for women. The intestinal isoenzyme was higher (p<0.05) in subjects with blood groups O and B than in those with blood groups A and AB and higher (p<0.05) with the high-protein than with the low-protein diet. The following figures are averages and ranges proposed as reference values (units/litre) for men and women, respectively, in the age-group studied: total serum alkaline phosphatase 37.3 (22.7-61.3), 30.4 (18.5-50.0); intestinal phosphatase, O and B blood groups 5.3 (1.9-14.6), 3.9 (1.4-11.3); intestinal phosphatase, A and AB blood groups 2.4 (0.0-11.0), 1.9 (0.0-11.1); liver phosphatase 13.5 (8.5-21.6), 12.1 (8.2-17.9); bone phosphatase 18.8 (8.4-41.9), 14.7 (6.6-32.1).
