Ecdysterone and ecdysone from Polypodium virginianum

The whole plants of P. virginianum yielded the 2 most commonly occurring arthropod molting hormones ecdysterone and ecysone. [Assays were conducted on the larvae of Sarcophaga peregrina]. The presence of a few more substances, which may be arthropod molting hormone analogs, was noted, but they were not characterized due to lack of materials. The yield of the main component, ecdysterone, was approximately 0.02% (calculated on the basis of the dried plants). The phytoecdysone content of this fern is on the order of that (0.05%) of P. japonicum Makino and smaller than that of P. vulgare.
